Common Recipe for Caprese salad
Ingredients:
- 2 large ripe tomatoes (about 400g), sliced into 1/4-inch (0.6cm) thick rounds
- 250g fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 1/4-inch (0.6cm) thick rounds
- 1/4 cup (15g) fresh basil leaves, whole
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 teaspoon (3g) sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon (1g) freshly ground black pepper
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon (1g) flaked sea salt for garnish
Instructions:
- Arrange the tomato slices on a large platter, slightly overlapping them in a circular pattern.
- Place the mozzarella slices in between the tomato slices, ensuring each mozzarella slice is paired with a tomato slice.
- Tuck fresh basil leaves between the layers of tomato and mozzarella, distributing them evenly across the platter.
- Drizzle the olive oil evenly over the tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil.
- Drizzle balsamic vinegar over the salad, allowing it to fall in thin streams across the surface.
- Sprinkle sea salt and freshly ground black pepper over the salad to taste.
- For a finishing touch, sprinkle a pinch of flaked sea salt over the top for added texture and flavor, if desired.
- Serve immediately at room temperature for optimal flavor.
Notes:
For the best results, use the freshest ingredients you can find, especially when it comes to the mozzarella and tomatoes. This salad is best served immediately after preparation, as the flavors are most vibrant when fresh. If you prefer, use balsamic glaze instead of vinegar for a slightly sweeter touch. This dish pairs wonderfully with crusty Italian bread or as a side to grilled meats.
