Common Recipe for Arepas
Ingredients:
- 2 cups (240g) pre-cooked cornmeal (masarepa)
- 2 1/2 cups (600ml) warm water
- 1 teaspoon (5g) salt
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) vegetable oil, plus more for cooking
- 1/2 cup (50g) shredded cheese (optional)
- 1/2 cup (120g) black beans, cooked (optional)
- 1 ripe avocado, sliced (optional)
- 1/2 cup (120g) shredded chicken or beef (optional)
- Butter, for serving (optional)
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal and salt.
- Gradually add the warm water to the cornmeal, mixing with your hands until a smooth dough forms. Let the dough rest for about 5 minutes to allow the cornmeal to absorb the water.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls. Flatten each ball with your palms to form discs about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) thick.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Place the arepas in the skillet and cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and develop a crust.
- Transfer the arepas to a baking sheet and place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for an additional 10 minutes to cook through.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly. Slice each arepa in half horizontally, creating a pocket.
- Fill the arepas with cheese, black beans, avocado, shredded chicken, or beef as desired.
- Serve warm, with a small pat of butter on top if desired.
Notes:
Arepas can be filled with a variety of ingredients based on personal preference. Common fillings include cheese, meats, beans, and avocado. They can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days and reheated in an oven or skillet. To ensure the arepas cook evenly, make sure they are not too thick. Adjust the cooking time based on the thickness of the arepas.
