Common Recipe for Apple crumble
Ingredients:
- 4 large apples (about 2 lbs/900g), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 tablespoons (30g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5g) ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) lemon juice
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup (45g) rolled oats
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and diced
- 1/4 teaspoon (1g) salt
- Vanilla ice cream or custard, for serving (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch (23cm) baking dish.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat the apples evenly.
- Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- In another bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, oats, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the cold diced butter to the flour mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or custard, if desired.
Notes:
This apple crumble can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes. For a nutty twist, you can add a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble topping. This dessert is perfect for using up a mix of apples, such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp, for a balance of tart and sweet flavors.
