Common Recipe for Apple crumble

Ingredients:

  • 4 large apples (about 2 lbs/900g), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) lemon juice
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (45g) rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and diced
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1g) salt
  • Vanilla ice cream or custard, for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch (23cm) baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss well to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  4. In another bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, oats, and salt. Mix well.
  5. Add the cold diced butter to the flour mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
  9. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or custard, if desired.

Notes:

This apple crumble can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, warm in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes. For a nutty twist, you can add a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble topping. This dessert is perfect for using up a mix of apples, such as Granny Smith and Honeycrisp, for a balance of tart and sweet flavors.
