Ham and cheese sandwich

A classic sandwich made with layers of ham and cheese, often served on sliced bread or a baguette, and sometimes toasted or grilled.

Instructions

  1. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  2. Lay the slices of bread on a clean surface. Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each slice.
  3. On the non-buttered side of two slices, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard and mayonnaise.
  4. Layer the ham and cheese over the mustard-spread slices. Add tomato slices, a pinch of salt, and pepper.
  5. Top with fresh arugula or lettuce, then place the remaining bread slices on top, buttered side up.
  6. Place the sandwiches in the preheated skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt.
  7. Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook the other side for another 3-4 minutes until the bread is toasted and the cheese is fully melted.
  8. Remove from the skillet and let cool slightly. Slice each sandwich in half if using whole grain bread, or into smaller pieces if using a baguette.
  9. Serve warm with a side of crisps or a light salad.
