Croque Monsieur
A Croque Monsieur is a classic French sandwich featuring ham and melted cheese, typically Gruyère or Emmental, layered between slices of buttered bread and topped with creamy béchamel sauce
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste.
- Gradually add the milk to the saucepan, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and nutmeg, then remove from heat.
- Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on 4 slices of bread. Place a slice of ham on top of each, followed by a generous amount of Gruyère cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices.
- Spread the remaining softened butter on the outside of each sandwich. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Spoon the béchamel sauce over the top of each sandwich, ensuring even coverage.
- Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese evenly over the béchamel sauce.
- Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Allow the sandwiches to cool for a few minutes before serving.
