Croque Monsieur

A Croque Monsieur is a classic French sandwich featuring ham and melted cheese, typically Gruyère or Emmental, layered between slices of buttered bread and topped with creamy béchamel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for 1-2 minutes until it forms a paste.
  3. Gradually add the milk to the saucepan, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and nutmeg, then remove from heat.
  4. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on 4 slices of bread. Place a slice of ham on top of each, followed by a generous amount of Gruyère cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices.
  5. Spread the remaining softened butter on the outside of each sandwich. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Spoon the béchamel sauce over the top of each sandwich, ensuring even coverage.
  7. Sprinkle the Parmesan cheese evenly over the béchamel sauce.
  8. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
  9. Allow the sandwiches to cool for a few minutes before serving.
