Green bean casserole
A classic American casserole made with green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions.
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 5 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the onion and garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent and soft, about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until golden, creating a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk and chicken broth, ensuring there are no lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Add the salt, pepper, nutmeg, and cream of mushroom soup to the skillet. Stir until well combined.
- Fold in the cooked green beans and half of the crispy fried onions, mixing until everything is coated.
- Transfer the mixture to a 1 1/2-quart (1.4L) baking dish. Spread evenly.
- Top with the remaining crispy fried onions.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the casserole is bubbly and the onions are golden brown.
