Onion rings
A classic appetizer featuring sliced onions coated in seasoned batter or breadcrumbs, deep-fried until golden and crispy.
Instructions
- Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4-inch (0.6 cm) rings. Separate the rings and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cayenne pepper.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until well combined.
- Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture and whisk until smooth, creating a batter.
- Place the breadcrumbs or panko in a shallow dish or plate.
- Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then coat with breadcrumbs.
- Heat about 2 inches (5 cm) of vegetable oil in a deep pot or skillet to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry onion rings in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Immediately season with additional salt to taste.
- Serve hot with your choice of dipping sauces like ranch, ketchup, or a spicy aioli.
