Calzone

A folded Italian pizza filled with ingredients like cheese, meats, and vegetables, baked until golden and sealed to hold the flavors inside.

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and sugar in warm water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat the oven to 475°F (245°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into two equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 10-inch (25cm) circle on a floured surface.
  6. In a bowl, mix together ricotta cheese, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, bell peppers, oregano, and garlic powder.
  7. Place half of the filling on one side of each dough circle, leaving a 1-inch (2.5cm) border. Brush the edges with beaten egg.
  8. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together firmly and crimp with a fork to seal.
  9. Transfer the calzones to the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
