Baklava
A sweet pastry made of layers of phyllo dough filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup or honey.
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch (23x33 cm) baking dish with some of the melted butter.
- In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts, pistachios, cinnamon, and cloves. Set aside.
- Unroll the phyllo dough and cut to fit the baking dish. Cover the phyllo with a damp cloth to keep it from drying out.
- Place one sheet of phyllo in the baking dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat until you have 8-10 layers.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture (about 2-3 tablespoons) over the phyllo layers.
- Add another 5 layers of phyllo, buttering each layer. Continue layering nuts and phyllo until both are used, ending with at least 8 sheets of phyllo on top.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine sugar, water, honey, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Remove baklava from oven and immediately pour the hot syrup evenly over the baklava. Let cool completely before serving.
